CHOGM 2013 Colombo - Getting Around Colombo

Taxi
There are many companies which operate 24 hours of the day, within the city of Colombo. These radio cabs can be called by telephone. During peak hours and on weekends there usually is a 30-45 minute waiting period so make sure you call your taxi company in advance to make your booking. Almost all drivers can converse in English and they are metered with the average price being Rs.47.00 (US $ 0.60 ) per km.

Three Wheeler

Three Wheelers are available in plenty both in the cities and suburbs of Sri Lanka. They generally not metered and you would have to negotiate a price for a trip. Most of drivers don't speak fluent English so bit of skill is required when informing them of your destination and negotiating prices. Average prices around
Rs.30-Rs.40 per Km. Bargain for the best prices. For those who have not experienced a ride in a Three Wheeler, one could safely say it is an adventure that should not be missed if you can stand the dust and fumes of heavy traffic on the city roads.

Rent A Car

You could always rent a car to drive around Sri Lanka. If it is a self drive car, you need to possess a valid International Drivers License and be familiar with the road rules and right hand drive system in Sri Lanka.
If it is your first visit to Sri Lanka, our recommendation would be rent a car with a driver. This would give you a dedicated tour driver capable of giving you an excellent insight in to what the island has offer and greater flexibility on your journey. Divers are provided with accommodation and meals at the hotel you would stay in. Check with local tour operators.

Railway

The Railway Service operates from the main station in Colombo to all major cities around Sri Lanka. Prices are very reasonable, but getting around by train during peak hours is not advisable. The Inter City Express operates between principle cities at designated hours and ensures a comfortable seat for a slightly higher ticket price. The option of booking the Vice Roy Special from Colombo to your chosen destination and back is recommended for those who would like to take a scenic route and experience the old world charm of Sri Lanka's colonial era.

Air Taxi

An ideal way to avoid heavy traffic and road congestion, Sri Lankan Air Taxis give you the ability to save time and get a bird's eye view of scenic sights of Sri Lanka. Air Taxi service offer daily scheduled flights from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to Koggala and Dickwella with Kandy, Trincomalee and Batticaloa to be added subsequently.
