There are many companies which operate 24 hours of the day, within the city of Colombo. These radio cabs can be called by telephone. During peak hours and on weekends there usually is a 30-45 minute waiting period so make sure you call your taxi company in advance to make your booking. Almost all drivers can converse in English and they are metered with the average price being Rs.47.00 (US $ 0.60 ) per km.
Three Wheeler
Three Wheelers are available in plenty both in the cities and suburbs of Sri Lanka. They generally not metered and you would have to negotiate a price for a trip. Most of drivers don't speak fluent English so bit of skill is required when informing them of your destination and negotiating prices. Average prices around
Rs.30-Rs.40 per Km. Bargain for the best prices. For those who have not experienced a ride in a Three Wheeler, one could safely say it is an adventure that should not be missed if you can stand the dust and fumes of heavy traffic on the city roads.
Rent A Car
You could always rent a car to drive around Sri Lanka. If it is a self drive car, you need to possess a valid International Drivers License and be familiar with the road rules and right hand drive system in Sri Lanka.
If it is your first visit to Sri Lanka, our recommendation would be rent a car with a driver. The option of booking the Vice Roy Special from Colombo to your chosen destination and back is recommended for those who would like to take a scenic route and experience the old world charm of Sri Lanka's colonial era.
